The first six weeks of school is a big transition for first graders. It is important to teach the kids routines about the classroom. This takes explicit modeling and lots of practice.
Some of the routines we work on are: *arrival to school *using classroom materials *moving around the classroom *teacher signals for attention *bathroom use *lining up *moving through the halls *lunchroom expectations *recess expectations *end of the day expectations
The kids can get very tired during this period of time and will probably need some extra rest. Some kids will experience different levels of being homesick. Most of this subsides by the end of October.
